Seven years ago, I started Step2Growth with a simple mission: to help startups and small businesses build strong marketing foundations. What began as a service for tech startups has grown into a journey that’s been as challenging as it has been rewarding. Today, as I reflect on the past seven years, I want to share the lessons I’ve learned, the challenges I’ve faced, and the vision that drives me forward—so that you, too, can find inspiration and growth in your own journey.
Finding My Purpose in Marketing
When I started Step2Growth, I saw a need. Many tech startups had founders who were brilliant at building products but struggled with marketing—especially repositioning themselves. That’s where I stepped in. My goal was always to empower these businesses to become self-sufficient, setting up systems that worked even after I stepped away.
But the turning point in my journey came when I took on a small business client who wanted to teach the card game Bridge over Zoom. It was a departure from my usual tech clients, but the experience brought me so much joy and satisfaction. That moment, along with seeing small business owners struggle with unreliable marketing agencies, solidified my decision to focus on small businesses. I wanted to be the trusted resource that truly made a difference for them.
Overcoming Challenges
One of the pivotal moments in my life came when I moved to the U.S. for love and marriage. It was a bold decision, and while I was excited for this new chapter, it also came with sacrifices. As an immigrant, I didn’t have work authorization initially, which meant stepping away from a stable career in India. Those 1.5 years without work were challenging for someone who had always been independent, but I decided to make the most of it.
I used that time to upskill by learning marketing, attending courses, and building my network. It was during this period that I discovered my passion for marketing and connected with my first mentor, who played a crucial role in shaping my journey. This phase, while difficult, laid the foundation for what would later become Step2Growth.
Being the only woman in the room, especially in the tech space, was another challenge I faced. I wasn’t the loudest voice, so I let my work speak for me—and that’s what drove me to excel. Over time, I learned to navigate those situations and build the confidence to hold my ground.
Lessons from 7 Years of Growth
- Let Your Work Speak for You: In moments where you feel unseen or unheard, focus on creating exceptional results. Success will make your voice louder.
- Finding Your Niche Matters: I’ve learned that understanding your audience and their unique pain points is critical. Even after years in marketing, I’m constantly fine-tuning this.
- It’s About the Customer, Not You: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success comes when you focus on what your customer truly needs—not what you think they need.
How Becoming a Mom Changed Everything
Motherhood has brought a new perspective to my work. It’s taught me to be intentional with my time, celebrate wins, and appreciate the journey. I’ve gone from constantly chasing the next goal to pausing and enjoying the moment. This shift has made me a better leader and a more present mom.
What’s Next for Step2Growth
Looking ahead, I’m thrilled about the possibilities technology offers for small business owners. I’m working on creating an AI-powered marketing agent—a personalized advisor that will be there to guide small businesses on everything from strategy to content creation. It will act as a dedicated marketing expert, always on their side, and help them succeed without needing to navigate unreliable services.
A Message to You
